Through the eyes of a legend
Here is a treasure trove of magic - an eclectic compendium of carefully written and lovingly illustrated magical effects. When Martin first released his father's collection on CD (at dawn of the 21st Century) I wondered if the pages could be printed into a hardcover book… well, Magic does exist ! These books are absolutely stunning. Call me old-school, but so much nicer to have a book in your lap and turn through pages, opposed to reading from a screen.
Another fascinating aspect, is how many of these entries are variation of another famous magician’s effect. For some reason I thought all were Eric Lewis inventions, but it’s a curated collection of effects Mr. Lewis fancied - and clearly used himself - with full credit shared.
It’s fun to read one of these effects and then try to find the original source - in an old magazine like The Phoenix or Magic Wand - or perhaps buried in some other vintage book. There's even a few Ed Marlo effects from the 1940’s in these pages. Tracing the effects back to their lair is half the fun!
As if four superb volumes of personal magic from Eric Lewis were not enough, Volume 5 serves up a bonus. Here it feels like peering into his personal files with all the notes, sketches, reviews and essays. Magikraft even took care to maintain the style and spirit of previous volumes to match the set.
This fabulous series is a must-buy for magic historians, enthusiasts and workers. As the adage goes: "if you want to keep it a secret, put it in print." Here's classic magic from a legendary performer and writer who actually knew all the people he writes about.
